How Feng Shui Can Improve Your Home and Wellbeing
A balanced and harmonious environment has a surprisingly powerful impact on our health and overall wellbeing. Feng Shui helps create spaces where we naturally feel better, more focused, and more at peace.
What Is Feng Shui?
Feng Shui is part of ancient Chinese philosophy, closely related to I Ching, acupuncture, Tai Chi, and shiatsu. At its core are universal principles such as Yin and Yang, Chi (life energy), the five elements, and the eight trigrams. Together, these concepts form a holistic way to approach both life and living spaces.
The Role of Chi in Your Home
Feng Shui offers practical guidance on arranging your home so that Chi – the life force energy – can flow freely. Chi affects how we feel, behave, and interact in a space.
We look beyond aesthetics like trendiness or design. Instead, we focus on the energy flow of a room: where does it move freely, and where is it blocked? This hidden flow influences your mood, energy, and even physical health.
Signs of Stagnant or Weak Chi
Negative Chi can often be seen and felt. Spaces may feel cold, chaotic, heavy, or uncomfortable. Common signs include:
• A broken or unstable chair
• A crooked rug or messy corner
• Harsh lighting or overly dark areas
• Bare walls, cluttered shelves, or unused furniture
These subtle imbalances can affect everything from your health and finances to your relationships and emotional stability.
Applying Feng Shui in Practice
The power of Feng Shui lies in the transformation it offers. Simple changes can make a big difference:
• Move your bed or desk into a better position
• Declutter and deep-clean your home
• Add light, greenery, or color to boost energy
• Renovate tired or neglected rooms
Sometimes, bigger life changes like moving to a new home can become a fresh start guided by Feng Shui.

Case Study: Designing a Healing Practice in The Hague
Just before Christmas, I helped design a new acupuncture and shiatsu clinic in The Hague. One of the most important Feng Shui elements? The entrance – also called the mouth of Chi.
A welcoming and open entryway allows positive energy to enter the space. When Chi flows in freely, it brings lightness, abundance, and opportunity.
Inside, we carefully chose the placement of:
• The treatment table (in the calmest area, away from doors and windows)
• The desk (in the commanding position: not facing the door directly, with a solid wall behind, and full view of the room)
• A decorative privacy screen for comfort and calm
• Plants, artwork, and soft lighting – all aligned with the Bagua energy map
